Review of Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk (2016) by Carrie H — 29 Nov 2016
Awful. It's filmed in high speed, which most moviegoers will never see the effect of the director's intention because cinema's are not outfitted with proper project equipment. I felt like I was watching a bad daytime soap opera.
The writing is unbelievable in parts (scenarios unrealistic), dialog is annoyingly insulting to the characters, and acting is flat/stale. Instead of getting lost in the story, I found myself wondering why the director made the choices he did.
He uses a lot of close ups and POV shots that seem out of place. If you're questioning the mechanics, you're not having an movie experience. Two good things: 1) makes you think about how a solider who is back perceives his experience when he comes back from war, 2) Kristin Stewart's performance was stellar.
I'd like to see someone else take a stab at some of the themes this filmed aspired to explore.
