Review of Billy Liar (1963) by Helen V — 09 Oct 2007
This is a very charming film about a deluded fanasist who lives with his parents in a small north of England town (the name of the town is unspecified in but it was filmed in Bradford). The eponymous fantasist unfortunately lacks the courage of his convictions and ultmately refuses to take the steps necessary to realise his dreams. He returns to his dreary existence because he is too cowardly to board the train to London with Julie Christie (from the old Bradford Exchange station that was demolished in 1973).
Poigant and funny with an exceptional performance from Leonard Rossiter as a modernising undertaker.
