Review of Billy Liar (1963) by Mark S — 14 Dec 2011
A key film in the British New Wave of the 1960s, this is innovative (necessarily so given the central character's wild imagination) and funny, and ultimately quite touching and sad. Billy is probably the best performance in Tom Courtenay's career, a quite pathetic character yet someone that in his desperation for escape from the mundane is in a way an empathetic everyman.
