Review of Billy Jack (1971) by Dave R — 07 Jan 2010
On the whole I think it's longer than it needs to be to say what it wants to say but I think it mainly feels that way because of the slow pacing. some better editing could've made this better - I suppose editing standards change through time.
I remember seeing this as a kid but all I remembered were the fight scenes - turns out there's more to it. this is my first time seeing it as an adult and I gotta say some of it was cheesy - in content I mean; a lot of new age mumbo jumbo: spirituality, pacifism, etc.
. and the some of the iconography is definitely dated - like the raised fist. luckily it doesn't completely fall into cliche, as the billy jack character is there to balance the stereotyped images of the hippies and the regular folk (read: conservative townspeople).
he's the quintessential hero who sees through the absurdities of society and consequently must be sacrificed - a tradition in western literature that stretches back to the greeks.
