Review of Bigger Than Life (1956) by Marc M — 25 Mar 2010
Bigger than Life recently benefitted from the criterion treatment on Blu Ray and the results are amazing. As a film, this stands out as an intersting entry into 50's melodrama. James Mason delivers a frightening performace with real edge and unpredictability.
Nicholas Ray presets him with shadows and camera angles that give him this menacing shadow. Its quite an effective thriller. On the flip side, it works as camp. I could easily watch this film and appreciate both sides of it.
I found I could laugh in one moment and bite my nails in the next. It's an interesting study of madness in the prison of suburban morals and ideals. Mason's performance alone make this required viewing.
