Review of Big Fish (2003) by Kevin D — 19 Jan 2012
I normally don't care for Tim Burton movies, but this movie was a masterpiece. Yeah it was similar to Forrest Gump, but this movie still offered a charm that was completely different from Gump.
Big Fish is a benevolent motion picture that will be sure to put a smile on your face. It's such a happy and cheerful movie. At the heart of the movie is an honest father-son relationship. The main goal of this movie is to show the power of stories and it succeeds. The script was great, the little vignettes that made up the film were funny and there were lots of quotable lines in the movie.
The cast was outstanding and it was nice to see the real Billy Crudup for a change (instead of seeing him decked out as a rocker in Almost Famous and the blue Doctor Manhattan from Watchmen). The film looks great too.
My favorite thing about the movie was that it did not really feel like a Tim Burton movie. You know what I'm talking about: the macabre/dark atmosphere with Terry Gilliam-esque settings. The visual look of this film was pure eye candy and Burton used lots of great effects.
The film finally comes full circle in the heart-warmingly sad finale. Some elements of this movie might seem familiar, but the movie was made with a lot of care and it is sure to move and reward its audience.
