Review of Big (1988) by Kyler D — 16 Jun 2011
Good: Funny, dramatic, charming.
Bad: Predictable and corny.
Josh Caskin(Young Josh played by David Moscow) has one wish, and that is to be "big". One day under the magic of a carnival booth, that dream comes true. Right off the bat, you know what the ending is going to be. There are certain subplots through the main plot that weren't my top guess of what would occur, but it was a possibility. Tom Hanks, who played Josh Baskin, is the best acting this film has to offer. The way he behaves really makes you believe he is a sixth grader in the body of a full grown man. Hr has that akwardness that goes with being a sixth grade boy. He is curious about himself, and explores this when he becomes an adult, making for some fun times. But most of all he is curious about girls, and when seeing one he at many times does not know what to do. This is especially noticeable when it comes to his job later in the story. The job he is employed to is perfect for him. The film is both touching, with times of a boy trying to go back to his mother in the body of a stranger, and comedy, with the boy trying to call the mother over the phone. Personally I found that there were scenes in the cinema that were dull and made the movie drag. Also I thought it pretty ridiculous how old the boy that the blond girl is dating is. She is in sixth grade and he can drive? So she is twelve and he is at least 18? Seems somewhat outrageous, unless this was just for the comedic effect of it. The ending along with being predictable, is also corny, but in a good way.
