Review of Beyond the Black Rainbow (2010) by Eriel B — 15 Jul 2012
This is one of those (often misunderstood) cinematic entities that are far more "experiences" than films. If you walk into this expecting a film, you will be gravely disappointed. But if you're hoping to embark on a (in this case, very unsettling) journey, you're in for a treat.
Reminiscent of the pacing and imagery in "2001: A Space Odyssey" with a touch of the retro-tech sound and feel of "Tron", "Beyond The Black Rainbow" is penetrating and intense, unfamiliar and hypnotic. If it weren't for the fact that it vaguely makes some sort of sense, I would hastily label this "yet another druggie film". But there is more to this than random, lava-lampesque imagery for paranoid stoners-much more. What that "more" is, I cannot say-but I'm thoroughly enjoying trying to figure it out.
