Review of Beyond the Black Rainbow (2010) by Dan H — 20 Feb 2013
A bizarre, surreal, hypnotic, trance-like throwback to spacey 80's sci-fi. While the story actually makes sense in it's own warped, surreal way.....it's the fantastic imagery that kept me watching.
It's also got a tasty, retro-sci-fi synth score that adds to the atmosphere. I'd dare say that this film isn't for most due to it's trippy, head-ache inducing style of storytelling (it's almost all visual ) but I definitely am surprised to say I actually enjoyed it.
The film does explain a few things, and the material is somewhat interesting as it deals with human's desire for inner peace, their tendency to turn to drugs to attain this, and God. It's a downright fascinating film, although it can be a hard film to watch due to not much really going on until the last 30 minutes.
The ending is sure to leave most with a bitter taste (talk about an anti-climax). The film works on it's own terms and I respect that. if you like acid-trips and mind-trips, there is a good chance you would get some enjoyment out of this cool, different and dare I say somewhat disturbing little flick.
