Review of Beyond the Black Rainbow (2010) by Peter F — 12 Apr 2013
Panos Cosmatos' feature film debut is best described as a Cronenbergian...mess. The film wears its arthouse influences shamelessly with some absorbing cinematography, but it lacks the mood to make audience members completely connect.
It also doesn't help that the movie is tonally uneven (spoiler alert: The film becomes a slasher pic in the last twenty minutes, complete with a scene where two unnamed metal heads get slayed). It's too flawed to recommend, but if anything Beyond the Black Rainbow does show promise for Cosmatos' future as a filmmaker due to it's interesting visuals.
Hopefully next time, however, he'll realize what works for an art video doesn't necessarily work in a narrative film.
