Review of Best Worst Movie (2009) by Christopher G — 04 Mar 2012
A fun documentary about the phenomenon behind Troll 2, a low budget horror movie dubbed by some to be the worst film ever made. There is a small but devoted cult following to this movie who gather for screenings and conventions, like a micro-sized version of the Rocky Horror community.
This film was actually directed by the child star of Troll 2, Michael Stephenson, who recounts how his youthful naivete led him to believe that this movie would rocket him to stardom.
But the real star of this documentary is George Hardy, the all-American leading man of Troll 2, who now runs a very successful dentistry practice in a small town in Alabama. He has such a joyful attitude with regards to his role in the film and the following it has attained. He's not afraid to make fun of himself and he seems to genuinely appreciate every single person that has seen his masterpiece. Without him, there probably wouldn't be much worth watching here. On the other side, we have the Italian director, Claudio Fragasso, who seems to be a little more defensive about the reputation that the movie has received, but is still game enough to attend fan events and take part in Q&A sessions.
Best Worst Movie is just a fun little flick about a side of cinema that doesn't often get too much (good) attention. It's worth checking out if bad horror movies are one of your guilty pleasures.
