Review of Best Worst Movie (2009) by Ruairí C — 22 Nov 2013
Made for fans of the film "Troll 2", this documentary forgoes even summarising the plot of the Best Worst Movie ever made, and focuses instead on the people who made the movie, and the cult fandom it now enjoys. While this can make it frustrating for the uninitiated, the undeniable charm and likeability of the movie's cast and fans will carry you through until the director (and "child-star" of Troll 2) resorts to exploiting one actress's personal struggles, humiliating some of the cast at an English Convention where nobody has even heard of the film, antagonising the admittedly pompous Italian Director of Troll 2 and revelling in a lot of self-congratulatory sentimentality when trying to sum up the impact of "Troll 2" as something something deeper and more profound than a laughably terrible low budget failure of a horror movie, all to fill out the runtime.
There was a much better story to be told here about how, even with the best intentions, such a terrible film as Troll 2 can be made. In fact, many people throughout the film comment on this, however the director would instead rather focus on reliving moments from the movie and revelling in the adoration of cult followers, and himself, than carry out such an investigation. Segments with the writer of the movie and footage of the composer show they went to great lengths, travelling to Rome to meet these people, to get interviews (well, the composer doesn't get a word in but he plays the keyboard for a bit) but it amounts to two minutes screen time at best before we're whisked back to the States for more midnight screenings and fans telling us how amazing Troll 2 is.
