Review of Berberian Sound Studio (2012) by Bryon M — 29 Aug 2014
Giving this movie a star rating really doesn't do it justice. Why? Well like most art it is purely subjective and relies on the participant who is watching on what they bring to the table and notice and see. This film is either really pretentious or strangely magnificent.
The acting is good. Everyone involved do their part. The sound work in the film is suburb and above all else this is what drives the eeriness and dread throughout. The camera work is claustrophobic and really closes in as the movie moves on.
I loved the atmosphere but for me the ending felt wrong. Thinking it was about mental disease and schizophrenia, with the ending it felt like more a religious battle and the movie really did not show that to me. I thought all the satanic, evil talk of the horror movie, rotting fruit, actresses acting Bi Polar and screaming signified the mans mental breakdown. And worse off the film is slow. This is the worse offense. To many shots of things not needed but look nice.
Just note you will not see the movie the same way I did and really I thinks that's the purpose.
