Review of Berberian Sound Studio (2012) by Roy S — 23 Jun 2013
Five stars for originality, that is for sure. This story of a British sound technician working on a gory Italian horror film in the 1970s is simultaneously a salute to the foley artists of the analog era and a very creepy depiction of some sort of psychotic break, or descent into madness, or something.
To tell the truth, it breaks down toward the end, and I couldn't tell what was going on. The movie creates a wonderful tone but then it stalls when it becomes some sort of dreamlike (or nightmarish, to be more accurate) vision.
Great set design, acting, and it cleverly establishes its suspense without blood or violence, but doesn't seem to know where to go after creating these things.
