Review of Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970) by Matthew O — 06 Oct 2009
Similar in story to the first film, with the switch of having the lead arriving on the planet to discover what happened to Taylor (Heston) in the original planet of the apes. Still Beneath is a far more deeper film, in mood and scope.
Touching on all the points which lead to the revealing conclusion of the first film. Scenes to note are the worshipping of the atomic bomb, from the mutated humans, in the third act of the film. Bleak, but essentrial for the continuation of the series.
Plenty of food for thought. For the time impressive visuals including, more of the baron new york desecrated landscapes, also note great makeup.
