Review of Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970) by Glen B — 08 May 2011
If we can agree the first is time less. Then it's not a stretch to like the second movie yes its hokey at times. What I do like is the General Ursus Ape he sorta reminds me of the opening scene in Patton, his " only good human is a dead human is so cliche but I would be more disappointed if I didn't hear such a line.
Instead of focusing on the poor production value of some scenes or focusing on bad dialogue, I think we owe it to our selves to enjoy a rushed production for the interesting way it takes the story. The mutants are a little disappointing because the screenwriter had a real chance to show what would happen to humans after years of fallout exposure.
In thus case although they are mutated under their mask, they now have a super mind control power which is silly. More likely any surviving human mutants would be fierce beast and hunters that a war with gorillas would seem some how even.
I think Fox studios wanted to quickly recapture the success of the first movie and rushed out a decent sequel but came up short on the true potential of Apes realizing that mutant powerful humans do exist.
All and all I like the movie and enjoy all the apes sequels for imaginative idea they represent.
