Review of Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970) by Luke P — 06 Apr 2008
Following straight on from where the original ended, Beneath the Planet of the Apes is a fairly decent sequel. Its follows pretty much the same structure; Charlton Heston lookalike James Franciscus lands on the planet in the midst of a rescue mission, is captured by the apes, Zira helps him escape, he discovers the planet is Earth, and says "damn you" a lot.
This sequel does have some good ideas though, such as the underground Atomic bomb- worshipping cult, and again it features another great ending, and Charlton Heston does re-emerge for a cameo. The edgy political and social elements of the first film (a huge part of it's success) have been blunted for this sequel however, making this an enjoyable film, with some great ideas, but not enough to sustain it as a whole.
Enjoyable but forgettable.
