Review of Bend of the River (1952) by Private U — 08 Jul 2007
This 'obscure' and 'light" 1952 western is my favorite of all time. You can see it as a standard genre adventure (get the wagons through) but the paring and contrasting of Stewart and Kennedy makes this something much deeper if you are prepared to look.
It also contains two of the coolest scenes of all time. One is the mid-shot of Stewart, Kennedy and Hudson shooting their way out of the Saloon and the other is Stewart's anger at the campfire scene.
Some actors have come close to Stewart's position as an 'everyman' (Tom Hanks for example), but what they all lack is the ability to get angry like you can feel it. A little masterpiece.
