Review of Ben-Hur (1959) by David F — 22 Aug 2016
The chariot race scene alone is worth 4 stars. Unfortunately, much of the rest of this astounding epic drags as the proselytizing narrative attempts to tie the life of an aristocratic Judean to that of Jesus to send some kind of a spiritual message.
The production values of its recreation of the Roman world are mostly amazing and the story of a friendship turned to mutual hatred is somewhat interesting on a psychological level but it doesn't quite live up to it's epic trappings in runtime, lush orchestral score, and opulent sets.
