Review of Ben-Hur (1959) by John A — 18 May 2011
One of the better epics, and certainly one of the better Jesus-themed movies, as it allows him to be a central character without having to look at an actor try to play deity. Instead, Wyler rightly leaves that to imagination, focusing instead on the effects of Jesus on the lives of others.
The standout battle scene and chariot race are well known, but it is the smaller, expressive moments I like best: the exchange with Esther early in the film, Judah's short, silent prayer before the race, and Judah's ascending the stairs at the film's conclusion.
