Review of Belle (2013) by Thylias M — 28 Jun 2014
Great film that made me think quite a bit about race relations, especially how Britain was far ahead of the US, and Belle's role in ending Britain's slavery. I couldn't help but wonder what may have happened had Belle's father lived.
I was a mixed-race woman watching this film with my good friend, a white man who hasn't experienced racial problems as I have; eye-opening for him, and made me revisit problems in the US that helped to prolong slavery here, where effects are still experienced.
I'm lucky to live in the greater Ann Arbor area where racially mixed couples is much more accepted than in other US locations. Belle was a very powerful woman.
