Review of Belle (2013) by Ted N — 03 Apr 2015
Mulatto daughter of a younger son is installed with the Lord Chief Justice of England just in time to help him make the right decision in the Zong case, where diseased slaves were thrown overboard because they were worth more dead than alive - and the LCJ found for the insurers, who suspected fraud, thus putting a nail in the coffin of slavery.
Spirited and in places hopelessly anachronistic period drama, sumptuously filmed and convincingly played. Nice parallel examination of all ownership of humans by other humans, whether it be women by men, or black people by whites.
