Review of Being There (2011) by Sijie L — 16 Dec 2007
What make this movie so special?
In the movie, Chausey Gardenier, speaks what he meant, literally, without any metaphor. He is a true gardener, who doesnâ??t know how to read or write. He has been honest about him being a gardener and illiterate.
However the problem is the people. Because the president of a country has quoted what him, everyone else assume that he must be somebody great, out of their own level, that they tend to relate what he says to the important issues, of the country, such as the economy, the financial status of the country. When he said he doesnâ??t read the papers, people presume he thinks the TV is more useful than the paper in terms of delivering the news.
We indeed made a lot of assumption from what one didnâ??t say. There can be so many guess of what one means when he said, â??I donâ??t readâ??. Does he mean, he canâ??t read, or he doesnâ??t like reading, or he just donâ??t read? People will go all around the place to search for answer except accepting the first and only statement that has been pointed out.
That is what human are, curious, doubtful, letting imagination flow all over the place and not accepting what is shown on the outer layer.
In the end, it was the innocent, simple minded gardener taking the triumph on the race that only the most powerful, most cunning people ever dare to join, earning everyoneâ??s vote and respect, because there is simply no record showing any of his bias opinion. He became the President of the United States. He won empty handed, pure minded, without any intentions.
It is our own assumption that has fooled us most of the time. Have we ever stopped making assumptions or judgments?
