Review of Begotten (1991) by Matthew L — 27 Apr 2009
Surreal is a pretty overplayed word these days, fortunately "Begotten" nails it without seeming overly pretentious or just plain dumb. A droning soundtrack of mostly bugs chirps consistently through the film, which follows the child of earth made flesh through a desolate landscape while he's tortured by hooded, faceless cannibals.
God disemboweling himself with a strait razor may be one of my favorite opening scenes of all time.
