Review of Before Sunrise (1933) by Nick R — 21 Jun 2013
A thought-provoking, sometimes mesmerizing look at life, love, and what it means to truly connect with another person. There's palpable chemistry between Hawke and Delpy, who radiate a youthful energy but talk with the maturity of people twice their age.
They dive headfirst into their characters to the point where you often forget that there's even a camera in front of them. The filmmakers aren't afraid to let scenes breathe either, which reinforces the confident performances.
What results is a raw, naturalistic, and frank series of conversations that are both enlightening and challenging. The transitions between these conversations feel a bit clumsy, but they serve to help the audience keep track of time so that when we do reach that final bittersweet moment of the evening, it hits with with a surprising amount of gravity.
