Big discrepancy between the "expert" reviewers and what the audience liked. This was an outstanding performance by Rami Malek. In fact I cannot think of any individual acting performance in any film, better in the last 20 years.
Hearing the conversations of people leaving the cinema, phrases like "that was so good" and "he was brilliant" were echoed throughout. So much for "expert" reviewers...but history is littered with examples of reviewers over analyzing.
