Review of Before Night Falls (2000) by Matt B — 24 Jun 2008
Javier Bardem is fast becoming one of my favorite actors. This movie spends a lot of time speaking to sexual freedom, but also freedom of expression and the conditions that cultivate it. I liked how the movie didn't try to splatter Arenas' works everywhere.
More focus on the struggle itself. I felt definite City of God vibes and this film was probably an influence. The camera, instead of flashy cinematography, was very loose and personal. Making the entire movie very internalized.
While the Diving Bell and the Butterfly was the better Schnabel movie, I like Before Night Falls more.
