Review of Before Midnight (2013) by Jukka H — 23 Nov 2013
Natalia (Xenia Kalogeropoulou): Like sunlight, sunset, we appear, we disappear. We are so important to some, but we are just passing through.
I have been such a fan of the first two films; I fell in-love with "Before Sunrise" instantly because when I first saw it, there was just nothing like it. The film's dialogue was fast-paced and clever, full of golden quips, charming anecdotes and enlightening ideas, it was like watching an old Tracy-Hepburn film, Delpy and Hawke had an undeniable and unique chemistry. It was just electric! Then the second film, "Before Sunset" was just as charming and as exhilarating. It had all the same familiar feelings from the first film that you fell in-love with and I didn't even minded that the two characters were essentially having an affair. I wanted so much to fall in-love with this film too, all over again, but it just didn't have the same magic the first two films had. Granted, this was still a really good film, Delpy and Hawke still make a very dynamic duo, their chemistry is still as explosive as in the first two films but this movie just didn't have the same manic and languid vibe the first two did. I guess every child loves hearing how their parents fell-in love but like all kids they hate seeing their parents fight and there was just too much negative energy in this movie, it was really upsetting, but understandably the natural stage of Jesse's and Celine's relationship and in the end...well, let's say the ending was satisfying. I still like the series of films but admittedly, this is not my favorite of the trilogy.
