Review of Before Midnight (2013) by Bruno V — 09 Jan 2014
The third and finest chapter in a trilogy spanning 18 years, Before Midnight is the very finest sort of romantic comedy, not to mention a near-perfect film. Told in "real time," this honest, brutally beautiful portrayal of the complexities of love and commitment feels like a Raymond Carver short story set to screen.
Yes, it's that good. Stars Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy inhabit the characters they co-wrote with director Richard Linklater so completely that the viewer cannot help but be swept up in their sheer humanity.
Note that although it's possible to appreciate Before Midnight on its own, it would be worth your while to hunt down and watch its predecessors Before Sunrise (1995) and Before Sunset (2004) first.
