Review of Before Midnight (2013) by Inka S — 17 Jan 2014
(Whoa, did that caught you off guard or what?) "Before Midnight" is still decidedly a "Before" film, and that makes it hard to review for me. It's quite hard to articulate what makes two people, completely unrelated to us, just walking and talking is so fascinating to watch. It is also important to review "Midnight" in context with the other two films ("Before Sunset" and "Before Sunrise"), because honestly, is there any other way?
While the previous films is about finding love in the wilderness and knowing the one you're with, this film is about "staying in love" which one could argue is the more important part. This is a story about a couple who knows everything and anything about each other. Needless to say, love is palpable in the air but people changes and dynamic shifts. "Midnight", with all its charms and flaws, is an interesting dissertation of the evolution of love. It is also a friendly reminder that in the end, nothing hurts more than true love. warning: Depending you(r mood?) the movie can either be enlightening, or soulcrushing, or both in the same amount.
P.S. (SPOILER alert): my personal fan theory is that Celine is actually pregnant, which explains how she acts in the end a bit.
