Review of Becket (1964) by Adam R — 02 Sep 2007
An interesting portrait of the love/hate relationship between King Henry II of England and Thomas Becket, his one confidante and friend until circumstances put them at odds with one another.
Glenville's focus on the characters rather than the politicking that came to decide their fates makes the film interesting, and far more engrossing than contemporary costume dramas like "The Lion in Winter.".
However, the protracted running length and sometimes-overwrought dialogue (so many grand pronouncements) makes "Becket" an occasionally-trying film to watch.
Worth it for the performances, if nothing else.
