Review of Becket (1964) by Patrick H — 25 Mar 2009
Ugh! After being so impressed with "A Man for All Seasons" I thought that this would be a treat. This costume drama, featured unrealistic performances by O'Toole and Burton. This must have been a play prior to the creation of this movie, because the dialogue was simply too overstated for the screen format.
This could have been a lot better, had the emphasis been on understatement, finesse, and perhaps challenging the audience a bit more. Unfortunately, it seems to me that the setting and period piece dress (and horrid overstated heroic type music) was more important than the substance of this endeavor.
