Review of Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012) by Jillian L — 11 Feb 2013
So, there are parts of this I loved, and other parts where I was just plain confused. Honestly, I don't know what I missed, but the whole auroch beast metaphor thing just went completely over my head.
Did not understand that part of the movie at all. Also, I found the whole plot itself a little jumpy and all over the place. Now, there is some real potential in Quvenzhane Wallis. For such a little girl, she has a commanding presence that is way beyond her years.
Unfortunately, I couldn't understand about half of her lines, they were jumbled. However, what I could get, I thoroughly enjoyed. I appreciated the rawness of Dwight Henry's performance, especially in the last half hour or so of the movie, but some of the motivations behind the character's actions in the movie were really confusing.
I didn't quite get why he was doing certain things. But Henry and Wallis had fantastic chemistry that really drove the poignant parts of the movie. That was where the movie triumphed was in the poignant, heartfelt moments that left me crying.
Unfortunately, I think a lot of that is buried in stuff that wasn't really needed.
