Review of Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012) by Tyler H — 15 Jul 2013
An interesting part fantasy, cautionary tale and family drama centering around Hushpuppy and she is dealing with the changing world around her in the Bathtub (one would assume an allegory for New Orleans and Hurricane Katrina) and trying to find a way to stand on her own as her father goes missing for periods of time due to failing health, an absentee mother and a hostile environment.
A very original voice in terms of visual style taking the used future concept and pushing it to extremes and also adding a little Mark Twain taste for extra flare. Will be interesting to watch Quvenzhane Wallis develop into an adult actress since she has a strong presence in no doubt which is a touch performance for a young actress.
Not sure if I warrant it all the Oscar nominations it deserved but definitely rank it as one of the gems from 2012.
