Review of Beaches (1988) by Stephen M — 29 Mar 2008
I love eighties movies. There are different types of them, too. This one is an eighties movie for the girls and gays; in fact, it may be the quintessential eighties movie for girls and gurls. And I love it.
I didn't read the novel so I can't compare it. But Garry Marshall tells story in the best way - you have to be a complete cynic to not enjoy something about this movie, even if it is just one of Bette's tit jokes.
We've got sunny California locations, gritty New York ones, bright colours, musical numbers, Barbara Hershey's meliflous voice and Bette's racous sense of humour.
AND some really lovely pathos from the divine Miss M.
It's a really lovely movie. One I love.
