Review of Be Kind Rewind (2008) by Scott M — 10 Jul 2010
Indie comedy from Michel Gondry, in which video store workers Jack Black and Mos Def have to recreate their entire stock of films after a freak accident renders all their VHS tapes blank. The first act is dull, but once the sweding begins then the laughs start to come.
The second half of the film instils some heart by morphing from simple comedy into a touching 'community-coming-together' story, that never feels forced or over-sentimental. Black is relatively restrained, and finds a good on-screen relationship with Def, while the likes of Danny Glover and Mia Farrow bring some class to the proceedings.
Overall Be Kind Rewind is a mixed bag, but ultimately a successful film.
