Review of Be Kind Rewind (2008) by Andrew B — 04 Jan 2011
Odd, very odd, and yet somehow, in someway, it struck a chord with me. Be Kind Rewind has a ton of heart, and you can tell that the team that worked on it not only had fun working, but had a genuine love of movies.
And it's very funny; the gags involving the "sweded" movies (cheap remakes shot on VHS) are priceless. Jack Black is also not his usual self it seems, he seems a bit more reserved (although still insane). Black and Mos Def make a great paring, Mos Def serving at the setup-man while Black, of course, gets all of the punchlines. It's a real knockout of a one-two-punch.
And the ending had some sort of magic woven into it; I won't spoil the ending mind you, but I will say it's simply a scene of people watching movies: An audience, a screen, the blinking of a projector, and a roll of film (or in this case a VHS tape).
I guess I have a soft spot for movies about movies.
