Review of Battleship Potemkin (1925) by Akira Y — 30 Sep 2007
The Odessa Steps sequence is a masterful piece of work, but it's the only reason that this is remembered at all. The rest of the film is pure propaganda, and it's actually quite boring. The shots are too long, and it does that thing that most silent films do which drives me crazy: it tells the audience what they are seeing.
I only want title cards that show me dialouge; stop telling me that someone is angry when I can clearly see that through their acting. Silent film actors overacted so much that it's impossible not to get their emotions, so stop treating me like an idiot.
