Review of Battleship Potemkin (1925) by Vijay L — 14 Jan 2010
Along with its visual achievements, the Battleship Potemkin also displays the worst propagandist features. The movie has utterly one-dimensional characters: spineless and evil Imperialists as well as heroic and oppressed Comrades.
The visuals are memorable: A hero gets shot in the back. The "imperialists'" shooting of a child is placed in clear display. At another point, the classic scene of a pram taking ages to begin its roll down a flight of stairs where it is precariously positioned is shown. This probably led to a lot of imitators allowing those painful seconds to pass very slowly by cutting between views. Classic it maybe; its goodness is debatable.
