Review of Battle Royale (2000) by Zachary G — 27 Jun 2014
Quentin Tarantino is one of my favorite film makers. I am glad that this movie inspired him to make some great films, even using one of the actors in this movie. However this movie was hard to watch. Plenty of other epically violent movies have been great, like Kill Bill, Clockwork Orange, Django and many more.
But it seemed to work in those films and not seem too out of character or fake enough that it was fun to watch. This film made it too real. It's definitely what inspired the Hunger Games, but this took that twisted story idea and really drove it home.
Poor kids that have to kill each other to survive, it was really messed up.. and even mores in this film. Bloody action was definitely apparent, but for once, it wasn't fun to watch. But I do think that is a good thing, they wanted it to be hard.
Hunger Games is child's play compared to this.
