Review of Battle of the Bulge (1965) by Keith T — 01 Jan 2009
This is a pretty excellent World War II film, given its age. It does actually bring out both the heroism of the German counter offensive through the Adennes in 1944 and the great American defense against it. That the offensive was through almost exactly the same spot as caught the French and British napping in 1940 would almost beggar belief, if it wasn't a true story. Yes, it has been more realistically portrayed since in Band of Brothers, but for 1965 this was a great film, hence my 4 stars. The only thing that lets it down are the shots in brilliant sunlight, even when the whole battle is supposed to be fogged in.
I'm not sure Robert Shaw ever made a bad film, before his early death, and this is one of his finest performances.
