Batman the Killing Joke opens with a backstory, explaining the relationship between batman and batgirl, establishing a more filled out character roles than the original comic did, their relationship is.

The inclusion of cameo bits from previous renditions of batman and the joker adds to the level of respect the filmmakers had when making this film with references to Nolan's universe throughout.
