Review of Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders (2016) by Lewis E — 18 Dec 2016
Batman animations have remarkably maintained a high standard of quality, which is why I classify it as one of my most reliable sources of entertainment. 'Batman:Return of the Caped Crusaders' represents a rare dip in form.
This production deters from the usual and pays homage to Adam West's 1960s Batman, even resurrecting the man himself and a couple other cast members. I respect the dedication it shows to reincarnating the old series: from outlandish plots, enthusiastic voice acting, pantomime dialogue and all round camp-ness.
It successfully provokes nostalgia and it's hard not to laugh at the brand of comedy consisting of terrible puns and images such as Batman riding a spaceship, or even worse, dancing. Nevertheless, I was not fully comfortable with this creative interpretation before and am still not now.
Just too much ridiculousness to absorb, maybe for 20 minutes but not an hour-plus. Certainly delivers something different to the animated collection but its most notable effect was making me yearn for a return to the cool dark depictions of Batman that my generation has firmly adopted.
