Review of Batman Forever (1995) by Greg V — 13 Jul 2012
When I was a kid I absolutely loved this movie. I remember watching it on VHS probably 50 times. Looking back and rewatching, what the hell was I thinking? This is still entertaining, but it's a product for kids and the 90's.
I saw the 90's, because of all the neon colors, overacting, and Two-Face having a red and black ying yang sign on his parachute. Speaking of Two-Face, Harvey Dent was in the first "Batman" as a black man.
How the hell did he become Tommy Lee Jones? The first two Batman movies were dark, this is more towards the old Adam West version. The music is comical(although the soundtrack is great), it has Robin who is a joke no matter what the movie/show/comic.
The villains are both so far over the top, they aren't scary at all. Actually, the Riddler suffers from the same problem I had with the Joker in the first Batman movie. It's as if it's the Riddler doing a Jim Carrey impersonation.
Carrey just played himself like he always does, whereas Tommy Lee Jones was completely different than he ever has been. Val Kilmer is an OK Batman, but Michael Keaton was much better. Overall, this is better than numbers 2 and 4, but not as good as 1.
Joel Schumacher took the franchise over from Tim Burton, and should have stopped here, because his efforts only get worse in the next installment.
