Review of Batman (1989) by Dante V — 18 Jan 2013
A captivating rendition of Batman-lore. This film is reminiscent of the "Killing Joke" graphic novel by Alan Moore and Brian Bolland. Anyone who appreciates Moore's vision of the Joker will not be disappointed with this film.
Burton effectively incorporated aspects of the Batman comics into his own unique style of film making to produce a dark, funhouse spectacle. The Joker was played by Jack Nicholson and was wisely casted.
His eccentric style of acting was necessary for the role and really accentuated the darkly humorous persona of the Joker. Unfortunately the film did not develop Batman as well as the Joker. Nicholson greatly overshadowed Keaton in this film thereby undermining and weakening the presence of the title character.
This film should have been called "Joker.".
