Review of Batman (1989) by Kevin P — 02 Feb 2018
This was the film that launched the modern day obsession with the superhero movie so it's difficult to watch now when let's be honest we're probably all a little weary of them now. Rather than the graphic novel slant that Nolan was to take with the reboot Tim Burton approached this completely from the comic book slant, albeit with his distinctive gothic take.
Mostly it really works, I remember this film being huge as a child, I had the collector cards etc. The action looks a little dated now but the first half in particular which is basically 'The Joker Story' is really good.
Gets a little formulaic in the second half but still stands up as a great comic book movie. Astonishing really how side-lined Keaton's Batman is in his own film, but Nicholson's Joker really is something, funny yet menacing.
A great play on his own persona.
