Review of Batman (1989) by Maddox J — 01 Mar 2018
This movie nails two things: Atmosphere and score. Gotham City has a very, gothic, dystopian atmosphere (as do many of Burton's films) I don't get bored rewatching this film because there is so much to admire about the set design.
Danny Elfman's score is one of the most iconic in film history. Michael Keaton is also great in this movie. His Bruce Wayne can be dead-serious and a bit silly at the same time, making him very charismatic.
Jack Nicholson plays a very over-the-top (albeit entertaining) Joker, but seems to have much more screen-time than Batman. The only real problem I have with this film is that the plot is very dull. The Joker kills dozens of people over Vicki Vale.
This has always bugged me because it's so lazy and generic! He looks at a newspaper and goes "she's pretty, I like her. So I'm going to kill a ton of people." Also, the Joker is a psychopath, so he would never really love anyone.
Kim Basinger's acting in this movie, isn't all that great, but it's watchable. Overall, this is a wildly entertaining movie that may bother you if you're a hardcore Batman fan (like myself), but, as a film, is pretty good.
