With chilling suspense, powerful performances, and striking eroticism, Verhoeven's overheated psychological thriller is a deservedly celebrated modern classic. Stone and Douglas vigorously dominate the screen, and pleasing Hitchcockian homages beautifully lurk beneath the intriguing labyrinthine plot.
Basic Instinct certainly isn't without it's flaws, but the characterisation is excellent, the movie is wonderfully effective, and many scenes are incredibly memorable. Highly recommended to all fans of this genre.
