Review of Barry Lyndon (1975) by Brian S — 10 Sep 2010
From the man who never confined himself to genre or style, Kubrick brilliantly brings late-18th-century Europe to life in this terrific period drama. the action is pretty minimal, the characters aren't all that inspiring, and the length is pretty daunting.
yet this is still a very engaging and enjoyable film. the story of the rise and fall of a severely flawed man in a suffocatingly rigid society reflects a world view held by many even today. the humour in this film is especially enjoyable--very dry and ironic and embodied so wonderfully in the voice and words of the narrator.
definitely and underrated classic.
