Even with John Alcott's stunning natural-light imagery as a backdrop for Kubrick's ironic vision, Barry Lyndon may be too much of a slog for mainstream audiences and aficionados alike. But this may be Kubrick's most complex work, a sweeping, coldly calculating narrative that comes to surprisingly emotional and political conclusions.
